Brief DescriptionNirmal is called as land of toys and it is famous for paintings. Nirmal is a small town in the Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh. Nirmal is the picturesque town located amidst beautiful forests and hills. This little town occupies leading place in India for its handicrafts and toys. These toys are all the local articles that can be used in daily life- furniture, toys, boxes, paintings, jewellery etc. Nirmal is known for its colourful wooden toys. The tradition of making these wooden toys dates back to 400 years. The toys are carved from local softwood —‘ponki chekka’. Various parts of the toys are glued together and coated with ‘chinta lappam’ — a combination of sawdust and boiled tamarind seeds. Indigenously prepared hues are used.Nirmal, the little town that occupies a proud place on the handicrafts map of India lies in the district of forests, Adilabad. Nirmal is embedded amidst the Sahaydri mountain range which offers a wonderful and pleasant ambience surrounded by hills and forests creating a great climate throughout the year. Nirmal was renamed after a village headman ‘Neema Naik’ who used to make weapons of war. He also encouraged craftsmanship of his workers in making art of the wood engraving. It is said that Nizams of Hyderabad were very much inclined towards Nirmal’s wonderful wooden engravings and craftsmanship.
When to goThe best time to visit Nirmal is in from September and January.
